Nomi had never been in the basement of a casino before, but she had also never been to space, and that had happened just the other day.[break][break]
She could hardly believe it had happened, let alone that she had survived it. Not only that, but her mission had been a success: she had been able to recover a piece of the meteor's mineral vein, which had turned out to be some kind of crystal that could augment Pokémon, change their types, transform their abilities. Whereas Mega-Evolution seemed to temporarily evolve a Pokémon into a stronger form, this was a phenomenon unrelated to evolution. She had much to study about it still.[break][break]
Tonight, however, she would be studying something different, though no less exciting.[break][break]
"Are we ready to begin?" She asked Killian Decker, the man who had invited her to his underground laboratory. He was a fellow Rocket, but more than that, he was one of the most dangerous men she had ever met. Perhaps one of the most dangerous men alive.[break][break]
He was the avatar of Deoxys.[break][break]
Nomi could only dream of being able to speak with such a creature, learn its secrets. This Deoxys had always struck her as a rather lonely figure, one of a kind...except, it wasn't the only one, she knew. On Meteno, they had encountered its sibling? Counterpart? Nomi desperately wished to know what Killian had experienced when his companion and the other Deoxys had communicated. Had there been some form of recognition? To her eyes, the Meteno-Deoxys had been violently opposed to all who had made their way to its domain, but perhaps Killian's Deoxys had received a different sort of message.[break][break]
All they had left of the Meteno-Deoxys was its core. A beautiful, otherworldly object, so small and seemingly harmless.[break][break]
But Nomi knew better.[break][break]
Often that which seemed innocent was anything but.

Killian's work with the core began days ago, long before he'd asked Naomi for help. Three nights toiling alone in the dark on a problem beyond his depth. No more. Killian refused to keep bashing his head against a wall.[break][break]

People were a resource - time to use them.[break][break]

Killian led Naomi to Meteno-Deoxys' core at the center of the lab. Situated on a cylindrical podium beneath thick glass, it looked almost like a trophy rather than a creature's soul.[break][break]

"In a moment." Killian replied, resting a hand on the core's domed container. He stared long and hard at the icy-blue veins that ran through its emerald surface. They were scars he couldn't heal, bars to a cage Killian couldn't break - reminders that even in success, he still failed. [break][break]

He straightened his brow, which had unknowingly begun to furrow, and stepped back. [break][break]

"Now then," slipping his phone from his pocket, Killian pressed his finger to the screen and dragged it forward. Seconds later, a holographic display flickered to life before him. Various bits of data regarding the core showed. He pointed to a specific set of numbers, and they enlarged. [break][break]

"As you can see, Kyurem's ice refuses to give despite the heat." the temperature beneath the glass rivaled a Charizard's flamethrower. "I fear going any higher may damage the core further." and that he couldn't risk.[break][break]
